ประวัติความเป็นมา

         คติที่มาเกี่ยวกับวันลอยกระทงมีอยู่หลายตำนาน ดังนี้

1. การลอยกระทง เพื่อขอขมาแก่พระแม่คงคา

2. การลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาพระผู้เป็นเจ้าตามคติพราหมณ์ คือบูชาพระนารายณ์ซึ่งบรรทมสินธุ์อยู่ในมหาสมุทร

3. การลอยกระทง เพื่อต้อนรับพระพุทธเจ้า ในวันเสด็จกลับจากเทวโลก เมื่อครั้งเสด็จไปจำพรรษาอยู่บนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ เพื่อทรงเทศนาอภิธรรมโปรดพระพุทธมารดา

4. การลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาพระพุทธบาท ของพระพุทธเจ้า ที่หาดทรายริมแม่น้ำนัมมทานที เมื่อคราวเสด็จไปแสดงธรรมโปรดในนาคพิภพ

5. การลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาพระจุฬามณีบนสวรรค์ ซึ่งเป็นที่บรรจุพระเกศาของพระพุทธเจ้า

ประวัติการลอยกระทงในเมืองไทย

          การลอยกระทงในเมืองไทย มีมาตั้งแต่ครั้งสุโขทัย เรียกว่า การลอยพระประทีป หรือ ลอยโคม เป็นงานนักขัตฤกษ์รื่นเริงของประชาชนทั่วไป ต่อมานางนพมาศหรือท้าวศรีจุฬาลักษณ์สนมเอกของพระร่วง ได้คิดประดิษฐ์ดัดแปลงเป็นรูปกระทงดอกบัวแทนการลอยโคม การลอยกระทงหรือลอยโคมในสมัยนางนพมาศ กระทำเพื่อเป็นการสักการะรอยพระพุทธบาทที่แม่น้ำนัมมทานที ซึ่งเป็นแม่น้ำสายหนึ่งอยู่ในแคว้นทักขิณาบถของประเทศอินเดีย ปัจจุบันเรียกว่า แม่น้ำเนรพุททา

  

การลอยกระทงเพื่อบูชารอยพระพุทธบาท

          รอยพระพุทธบาทของพระพุทธเจ้า ที่ไปปรากฏอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมมทานที มีความเป็นมาเกี่ยวข้องกับพุทธประวัติ คือ ครั้งหนึ่งพญานาคทูลอาราธนาพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ให้เสด็จไปแสดงธรรมโปรดในนาคพิภพ เมื่อพระองค์จะเสด็จกลับ พญานาคทูลขออนุสาวรีย์ไว้กราบไหว้บูชา พระพุทธองค์จึงทรงประดิษฐานรอบพระพุทธบาทไว้ที่หาดทราย ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมมทานที เพื่อให้บรรดานาคทั้งหลายได้สักการะ บูชา

การลอยกระทงที่มีความเป็นมาเกี่ยวข้องกับพุทธประวัติ ยังมีอีก 2 เรื่อง คือ

 1. การลอยกระทงเพื่อบูชาพระจุฬามณีบนสวรรค์ และ

 2. การลอยกระทงเพื่อต้อนรับพระพุทธองค์ในวันที่เสด็จกลับจากเทวโลก

   

ตำนานการลอยกระทงเพื่อบูชาพระจุฬามณี

           เมื่อครั้งที่เจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ เสด็จออกจากพระนครกบิลพัสดุ์ในเวลากลางคืนด้วยม้ากัณฐกะ พร้อมนายฉันทะมหาดเล็กผู้ตามเสด็จ ครั้นรุ่งอรุณก็ถึงฝั่งแม่น้ำอโนมานที เจ้าชายทรงขับม้ากัณฐกะกระโจนข้ามแม่น้ำไปโดยสวัสดี

เมื่อทรงทราบว่าพ้นเขตกรุงกบิลพัสดุ์แล้ว เจ้าชายสิทธัตถะจึงเสด็จลงประทับเหนือหาดทรายขาวสะอาด ตรัสให้นายฉันทะนำเครื่องประดับและม้ากัณฐกะกลับพระนคร ทรงตั้งพระทัยปรารภจะบรรพชา โดยเปล่งวาจา "สาธุ โข ปพฺพชฺชา" แล้ว จึงทรงจับพระเมาลีด้วยพระหัตถ์ซ้าย พระหัตถ์ขวาทรงพระขรรค์ตัดพระเมาลี แล้วโยนขึ้นไปบนอากาศ พระอินทร์ได้นำผอบทองมารองรับพระเมาลีไว้ และนำไปบรรจุยังพระจุฬามณีเจดียสถานในเทวโลก

พระจุฬามณีตามปกติมีเทวดาเหาะมาบูชาเป็นประจำแม้พระศรีอริยเมตไตรยเทวโพธิสัตว์ซึ่งในอนาคต จะมาจุติบนโลกและตรัสรู้เป็นพระพุทธเจ้าพระองค์หนึ่งก็ยังเสด็จมาไหว้ การลอยกระทงเพื่อบูชาพระจุฬามณี จึงถือเป็นการไหว้บูชาพระศรีอริยไตรยด้วย

  

ตำนานการลอยกระทง เพื่อต้อนรับพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จกลับจากเทวโลก

           เมื่อเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะเสด็จออกบวชจนได้บรรลุธรรมเป็นพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าแล้ว หลังจากเผยพระธรรมคำสั่งสอนแก่สาธุชนโดยทั่วไปได้ระยะหนึ่ง จึงเสด็จไปจำพรรษาอยู่บนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ เพื่อทรงเทศนาธรรมโปรดพระพุทธมารดา ครั้งจำพรรษาจนครบ 3 เดือน พระองค์จึงเสด็จกลับลงสู่โลกมนุษย์ เมื่อท้าวสักกเทวราชทราบพุทธประสงค์ จึงเนรมิตบันไดทิพย์ขึ้น อันมี บันไดทอง บันไดเงิน และบันไดแก้ว ทอดลงสู่ประตูเมืองสังกัสสนคร บันไดแก้วนั้นเป็นที่ซึ่งพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าเสด็จลง บันไดทองเป็นที่สำหรับเทพยดาทั้งหลายตามส่งเสด็จ บันไดเงินสำหรับพรหมทั้งหลายส่งเสด็จ

ในการเสด็จลงสู่โลกมนุษย์ครั้งนี้ เหล่าทวยเทพและประชาชนทั้งหลาย ได้พร้อมใจกันทำ การสักการบูชาด้วยทิพย์บุปผามาลัย การลอยกระทงตามคตินี้ จึงเป็นการรับเสด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าจากดาวดึงส์พิภพ (เป็นตำนานเดียวกับประเพณีการตักบาตรเทโวรับเสด็จพระพุทธองค์ลงจากดาวดึงส์)

การลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาพระนารายณ์บรรทมสินธุ์

          ยังมีพิธีการลอยกระทงตามคติพราหมณ์อีกเรื่องหนึ่ง ซึ่งกระทำเพื่อบูชาพระผู้เป็นเจ้า คือ พระนารายณ์ที่บรรทมสินธุ์อยู่ในมหาสมุทร นิยมทำกันในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำเดือน 11 หรือ วันขึ้น 15 ค่ำเดือน 12 เป็น 2 ระยะ จะทำในกำหนดใดก็ได้

  

ตำนานการลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาท้าวพกาพรหม

          นิทานต้นเหตุเกี่ยวกับอีกเรื่องหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจ เป็นนิทานชาวบ้าน กล่าวถึงเมื่อครั้งดึกดำบรรพ์ มีกาเผือกสองตัวผัวเมียทำรังอยู่บนต้นไม้ในป่าหิมพานต์ใกล้ฝั่งแม่น้ำ วันหนึ่งกาตัวผู้ออกไปกากินแล้วหลงทานกลับรังไม่ได้ ปล่อยให้นางกาตัวเมียซึ่งกกไข่อยู่ 5 ฟองรอด้วยความกระวนกระวายใจ จนมีพายุใหญ่พัดรังกระจัดกระจาย ฟองไข่ตกลงน้ำ แม่กาถูกลมพัดไปทางหนึ่ง

          เมื่อแม่กาย้อนกลับมามีรังไม่พบฟองไข่ จึงร้องไห้จนขาดใจตาย ไปเกิดเป็นท้าวพกาพรหมอยู่ในพรหมโลก ฟองไข่ทั้ง 5 นั้นลอยน้ำไปในสถานที่ต่างๆ บรรดาแม่ไก่ แม่นาค แม่เต่า แม่โคและแม่ราชสีห์ มาพบเข้า จึงนำไปรักษาไว้ตัวละ 1 ฟอง ครั้งถึงกำหนดฟักกลับกลายเป็นมนุษย์ทั้งหมดไม่มีฟองไหนเกิดมาเป็นลูกกาตามชาติกำเนิดเลย กุมารทั้ง 5 ต่างเห็นโทษภัยในการเป็นฆราวาสและเห็นอานิสงส์ในการบรรพชา จึงลามารดาเลี้ยงไปบวชเป็นฤาษีทั้ง 5 ได้มีโอกาสพบปะกันและถามถึงนามวงศ์และมารดาของกันและกัน จึงทราบว่าเป็นพี่น้องกัน ฤาษีทั้ง 5 มีนามดังนี้

          คนแรก ชื่อ กกุสันโธ (วงศ์ไก่)

          คนที่สอง ชื่อ โกนาคมโน (วงศ์นาค)

          คนที่สาม ชื่อ กัสสโป (วงศ์เต่า)

          คนที่สี่ ชื่อ โคตโม (วงศ์โค)

          คนที่ห้า ชื่อ เมตเตยโย (วงศ์ราชสีห์)

          ต่างตั้งจิตอธิษฐาน ว่าถ้าต่อไปจะได้ไปเกิดเป็นพระพุทธเจ้า ขอให้ร้อนไปถึงมารดา ด้วยแรงอธิษฐาน ท้าวพกาพรหมจึงเสด็จมาจากเทวโลก จำแลงองค์เป็นกาเผือก แล้วเล่าเรื่องราวแต่ทนหลังให้ฟัง พร้อมบอกว่าถ้าคิดถึงมารดา เมื่อถึงเพ็ญเดือน 11 เดือน 12 ให้เอาด้ายดิบผูกไม้ตีนกา ปักธูปเทียนบูชาลอยกระทงในแม่น้ำ ทำอย่างนี้เรียกว่าคิดถึงมารดา แล้วท้าวพกาพรหมก็ลากลับไป

          ตั้งแต่นั้นมา จึงมีการลอยกระทงเพื่อบูชาท้าวพกาพรหม แล้วเพื่อบูชารอยพระบาท ซึ่งประดิษฐานอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมมทานที ส่วนฤาษีทั้ง 5 ต่อมาได้ตรัสรู้เป็นพระพุทธเจ้า ดังนี้

          ฤาษีองค์แรก กกุสันโธ ได้แก่ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงพระนามว่า พระกกุสันโธ

          ฤาษีองค์ที่สอง โกนาคมโน ได้แก่ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงพระนามว่า พระโกนาคมน์

          ฤาษีองค์ที่สาม กัสสโป ได้แก่ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงพระนามว่า พระกัสสปะ

          ฤาษีองค์ที่สี่ โคตโม ได้แก่ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงพระนามว่า พระสมณโคดม

          ฤาษีองค์ที่ห้า เมตเตยโย ได้แก่ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงพระนามว่า พระศรีอาริยเมตไตรย

พระพุทธเจ้า 3 พระองค์แรก ได้มาบังเกิดบนโลกแล้วในอดีตกาล พระพุทธเจ้าองค์ที่ 4 คือ พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าองค์ปัจจุบัน พระพุทธเจ้าองค์ที่ 5 คือ พระพุทธเจ้าที่จะมาบังเกิดบนโลกในอนาคต ได้แก่ พระศรีอาริยเมตไตรย

   

ตำนานการลอยกระทง เพื่อบูชาพระอุปคุตต์

          การลอยกระทงเพื่อบุชาพระอุปคุตต์นี้ เป็นประเพณีของชาวเหนือและชาวพม่า พระอุปคุตต์เป็นพระอรหันต์เถระหลังสมัยพุทธกาล โดยมีตำนานความเป็นมาดังนี้

เมื่อพระเจ้าอโศกมหาราช ทรงมีพระราชศรัทธาในพระพุทธศาสนา ได้โปรดให้สร้างพระสถูปเจดีย์และพุทธวิหารขึ้นทั่วชมพูทวีป มหาวิหารที่มีชื่อเสียงมากที่สุดคือ "อโศการาม" ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ในเขตแคว้นมคธ หลังจากที่สร้างพระสถูปเจดีย์ถึง 84,000 องค์สำเร็จแล้ว พระเจ้าอโศกทรงมีพระราชประสงค์จะนำพระบรมสารีริกธาตุของสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ไปบรรจุในในพระสถูปต่างๆ และบรรจุในพระมหาสถูปองค์ใหญ่ที่สร้างขึ้นใหม่มีความสูงประมาณครึ่งโยชน์ และประดับประดาด้วยแก้วต่างๆ ประดิษฐานอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำคงคาให้ปาฎลีบุตร อีกทั้งต้องการให้มีการเฉลิมฉลองยิ่งใหญ่เป็นเวลา 7 ปี 7 เดือน 7 วัน

แต่ด้วยเกรงว่าพญามารจะมาทำลายพิธีฉลอง มีเพียงพระอุปคุตต์ที่ไปจำศีลอยู่ในสะดือทะเลเพียงท่านเดียวเท่านั้น ที่จะสามารถปราบพญามารได้ เมื่อพระอุปคุตต์ปราบพญามารจนสำนึกตัวหันมายึดเอาพระรัตนตรัยเป็นที่พึ่งแล้ว พระอุปคุตต์จึงลงไปจำศีลอยู่ในสะดือทะเลตามเดิม

พระอุปคุตต์นี้ไทยเรียกว่า พระบัวเข็ม ชาวไทยเหนือหรือชาวอีสานและชาวพม่านับถือพระอุปคุตต์มาก ชาวพม่าไม่ว่าจะมีงานอะไรเป็นต้องนิมนต์มาเช้าพิธีด้วยเสมอ ไทยเราใช้บูชาในพิธีขอฝนหรือพิธีมงคล ฯลฯ
